Nigeria Reports People Missing After Boat Capsizes
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that the passengers were heading to Goronyo market when the mishap happened.
“About ten persons have been rescued,” NEMA stated, adding that it is “intensifying search and rescue operations” alongside local authorities and emergency teams to find those missing.
At least ten fatalities have been confirmed, local media sources relayed, quoting a separate release from the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency.
Eyewitness accounts shared with a news outlet indicated that the boat was overloaded and was transporting motorcycles in addition to traders.
Incidents involving passenger boats are frequent in Sokoto State. In June, seven people—including the canoe’s paddler—drowned when their boat capsized near Rinaye village in the Shagari Local Government Area.
In August of last year, at least ten others lost their lives after a wooden canoe overturned on the River Dundaye in Wamakko Local Government Area.
Another disaster in April 2022 on the Shagari River claimed 26 lives, mostly teenagers aged 15 to 17, who were reportedly collecting firewood across the river.
This recent tragedy follows another incident just weeks ago, where authorities reported at least 13 dead and dozens missing after a boat carrying about 100 passengers capsized in Nigeria’s north-central Niger State.
