Witkoff Says Russia Is Open to Territorial Concessions
Witkoff revealed this development ahead of a scheduled meeting on Monday at the White House, where Trump is set to host Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky alongside several Western European leaders.
The aim of the gathering is to negotiate a possible peace agreement between Moscow and Kiev.
Last Friday, President Trump engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska. During the summit, both leaders expressed restrained hope that meaningful progress had been achieved in efforts to resolve the ongoing war in Ukraine.
In an interview with CNN on Sunday, Witkoff disclosed that during the Alaska summit, Russian officials “made some concessions at the table with regard to all five regions,” referring to key zones along the front lines of the conflict.
The American envoy stated that the Kremlin appears willing to initiate “land swapping” negotiations with Kiev, using the current territorial boundaries as a reference point in certain locations.
He emphasized that Russia’s overall stance had experienced a “significant...moderation,” suggesting a more flexible approach from Moscow.
On Saturday, The New York Times and Fox News, citing unnamed European sources, reported that President Trump had expressed support for a peace proposal.
The plan allegedly includes Ukraine surrendering control of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics to Russia.
In return, Moscow would halt its military operations along the current front line in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
