UN Rights Chief Slams Israeli Strike on Qatar

(MENAFN) The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on Tuesday strongly denounced Israel’s assault on Hamas envoys in Doha, labeling it "a shocking breach of international law, an assault on regional peace and stability, and a blow against the integrity of mediation and negotiating processes around the world."

During an emergency session at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Volker Turk emphasized that the Sept. 9 incident "violated the right to life under international human rights law, and the principles of international humanitarian law."

He underlined that attacking mediators directly undermined Qatar’s standing as a conflict mediator.

"It is an attack on global efforts to resolve conflicts peacefully," Turk highlighted.

The UN official further noted that the strike coincided with a fresh Israeli evacuation directive impacting one million residents in Gaza City, as well as the government’s approval of the E1 settlement expansion near East Jerusalem.

He cautioned that this move was "bringing the two-state solution closer and closer to a point of no return."

Turk called on nations to halt the supply of weaponry to Israel that could contribute to breaches of the laws of war, insisting: "Member States cannot wait any longer."

Also participating in the debate, EU envoy Deike Potzel declared that the bloc stands in complete solidarity with Qatar, describing the Gulf nation as "our strategic partner, which, alongside Egypt and the United States, plays a crucial role as mediator of the conflict in Gaza."
