Power Reinstated at Chernobyl in Ukraine
(MENAFN) Electricity has been completely restored at the decommissioned Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant after a Russian attack damaged energy infrastructure in the city of Slavutych, according to Ukraine’s energy minister in a statement released late Wednesday.
Svitlana Hrynchuk confirmed that power had returned to all areas of the facility, including the New Safe Confinement — the massive structure built to contain the remains of the plant’s destroyed reactor.
She emphasized that radiation remains “within control limits” and currently does not threaten public health.
“Thanks to our energy workers for their lightning-fast and effective work! Your work is safety for all of Ukraine and Europe,” Hrynchuk stated.
Earlier that day, Ukraine’s Energy Ministry reported that sudden voltage fluctuations had temporarily interrupted power to the New Safe Confinement, which plays a critical role in containing radiation from the reactor’s ruins and preventing its release into the environment.
Russia has yet to respond to the allegations, and independent verification by international bodies remains challenging due to the ongoing war.
