Indonesia Freezes TikTok’s License After Livestream Data Failure

(MENAFN) Indonesia has suspended TikTok’s operating license after the platform failed to provide sufficient data on its livestream activities during the unrest that swept the country in August.

“This action underscores the government’s strong stance after TikTok provided incomplete data on its livestreaming activities during the riots that took place between August 25 and 30, 2025,” said Alexander Sabar, the Communication and Digital Affairs Ministry’s Director General for Digital Space Monitoring, in a statement to a state-run news agency.

TikTok had temporarily halted its livestream feature during the protests, citing "security measures."

The protests, which initially began in opposition to proposed hikes in lawmakers' allowances, turned violent, leaving at least 10 dead and dozens injured, including police officers. The situation escalated after an armored police vehicle struck and killed a motorcycle taxi driver in Jakarta on August 28. The incident sparked widespread riots across several provinces.

In Jakarta, demonstrators set fire to police stations and government buildings, destroyed vehicles, shattered windows, and injured officers by throwing stones.

Sabar confirmed that the suspension followed TikTok’s refusal to disclose detailed data on livestream traffic and the platform’s monetization activities. Authorities are also investigating the rise of online gambling content on the app.

"We called TikTok for clarification on September 16 and requested that they submit complete data by September 23," Sabar said, adding that TikTok’s failure to meet the deadline was due to internal data-use policies.

Sabar emphasized that the government's request was in line with regulations requiring platforms to provide authorities with access to data and systems for oversight.

“As a Private Electronic System, TikTok has violated its obligations. In response, we have decided to temporarily freeze its operations as part of our monitoring duties,” he stated.

Last month, Jakarta imposed a fine of nearly $900,000 on TikTok for failing to report its acquisition of the online marketplace Tokopedia on time.
