Kremlin rejects Ukraine ceasefire proposal as tactical move

(MENAFN) Russia has ruled out agreeing to a ceasefire that would be tied to holding a territorial referendum in Ukraine, arguing that such a pause would serve strategic maneuvering rather than contribute to a genuine settlement.

Commenting on the issue, a Kremlin representative said that proposals framed around halting the fighting for this purpose are unacceptable. “If the idea is to create a pretext for demanding a ceasefire, a respite, a pause on the front, then naturally it won't work,” he said, according to statements made during a televised interview.

The Kremlin’s position, he explained, is centered on achieving a final resolution to the conflict instead of a temporary suspension that could allow Ukrainian forces to reorganize. Emphasizing this stance, he added: “We want to work for peace, not a ceasefire. A ceasefire is a respite, another deception, another delay, another brainwashing. We need peace.”

These comments came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that any decisions related to territorial arrangements discussed in peace talks must ultimately be determined by Ukraine’s citizens. Stressing the role of public consent, he said: “I believe the people of Ukraine will answer this question – in the format of elections or in the format of a referendum – but there must be a position of the people of Ukraine.”
