China’s leader on Monday denounces “unilateral and bullying acts”
“All countries should respect the development paths chosen by other nations and abide by international law and the UN Charter, with major countries leading by example,” Xi said during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Beijing.
Xi’s remarks come in the wake of a US pre-dawn raid in Venezuela on Saturday, which resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were flown to New York to face criminal charges.
“The world is facing change and chaos, and unilateral, coercive actions severely undermine international order,” Xi added.
According to Venezuelan officials cited by the New York Times, the US operation left around 80 people dead. Maduro and Flores are currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, facing federal charges related to drug trafficking and alleged collaboration with gangs designated as terrorist organizations. Venezuelan authorities have called for their release, while Maduro denies the allegations.
