South Korea calls for exploring alternatives to reach peace in Peninsula

(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Monday, calling for the exploration of “alternatives” to secure peace on the Korean Peninsula.

The talks took place during Lee’s first state visit to China since assuming office last year.

Lee emphasized that Seoul and Beijing should work together to identify “viable alternatives for peace on the Korean Peninsula so that both countries can jointly contribute to peace, the basic foundation for prosperity and growth,” according to reports. He also described 2026 as “an important opportunity” to fully restore bilateral relations between South Korea and China.

The visit coincided with North Korea’s first ballistic missile test of the year on Sunday, involving hypersonic missile launches. Since his election in June, Lee has sought to revive ties with Pyongyang, although Pyongyang has yet to respond. Relations had worsened under the previous administration, which imposed controversial martial law.

Lee expressed his commitment to ushering in a “new phase” in South Korea-China relations and vowed to strengthen the Seoul-Beijing strategic partnership into an “irreversible trend of the times.”

Xi told Lee that China has consistently regarded its relationship with South Korea as central to its neighborhood diplomacy and reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to “steer the course of friendly cooperation, promote mutual benefit and win-win results, and bring the China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership forward along the track of sound development,” as stated by reports.

Following their talks, the two nations signed 15 agreements covering areas including scientific and technological innovation, environmental protection, transportation, and trade and economic cooperation, according to reports.

Lee arrived in Beijing on Sunday for his four-day visit.
