Greenland PM rejects suggestion of potential takeover
Speaking at a briefing, Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen made clear that Greenland’s political reality is fundamentally different. “Our country is not the right one to compare with Venezuela. We have a country that is democratic. It has been so for many, many years,” he said, underlining the territory’s long-standing democratic system.
Responding to concerns triggered by recent statements from the United States, Nielsen sought to reassure the public that there is no immediate threat. “The situation is not such that the United States can take over Greenland. That is not the situation. We should therefore not panic. We should restore the good cooperation we have had,” he stated.
Acknowledging that Greenland occupies a unique position and that citizens may feel uneasy, the prime minister said public anxiety was understandable. “I can fully understand that the population looks to Naalakkersuisut and is worried,” he said, referring to the territory’s government.
Nielsen also dismissed speculation about military involvement, arguing that such discussions are inappropriate. “First of all, I would like to say that I do not think it is appropriate to talk about possible or potential military operations in this country,” he said. He reiterated his position by adding, “I would like to repeat that we are not in a situation where we think that there could be a takeover of the country overnight.”
While stressing calm, the prime minister warned that the government may adopt a firmer stance if current patterns of discussion continue, noting dissatisfaction with the present circumstances. He also criticized the reliance on indirect messaging, insisting that serious matters should be handled through proper channels rather than public commentary. “Now it must be enough that communication takes place through the media and via various roundabout channels. That is not respectful,” he said.
Concluding his remarks, Nielsen called for solidarity within Greenland and strengthened cooperation with partner nations, emphasizing unity as the best response to external speculation and uncertainty.
