Hiroshima Peace Flame to Be Placed at Pearl Harbor Memorial

(MENAFN) A ceremonial flame that has remained alight since the period following the 1945 United States atomic bombing of Hiroshima is set to be placed at a memorial in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, during an event next month.

The initiative involves dividing the "flame of peace" and transferring part of it to a location connected to the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, as part of an effort to encourage enduring reconciliation between Japan and the United States. The proposal was introduced by relatives of Sadako Sasaki, an atomic bombing victim, according to a family member quoted by a news agency on Sunday.

Sadako Sasaki passed away at the age of 12 from leukemia caused by radiation exposure, ten years after the Hiroshima bombing. The symbolic flame will be transported from Japan in a specially designed container aboard a Japan Airlines flight, underscoring the ceremonial and diplomatic significance of the event.

The installation ceremony is planned for May 24 and is expected to include attendees such as descendants of former U.S. President Harry Truman, who authorized the atomic bombings of Japan, as well as family members of wartime Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tojo. The gathering is intended to highlight historical reflection and promote messages of peace between former adversaries.

The "flame of peace" has long been preserved in Yame City, located in Fukuoka Prefecture. It is believed to have originally been retrieved by Tatsuo Yamamoto from the burning remnants of Hiroshima. Yamamoto, who died in 2004 at the age of 88, maintained the flame in his home until it was relocated in 1968 to a peace tower in Yame.

In 2021, Yuji Sasaki, the nephew of Sadako Sasaki, became aware of the "flame of peace" and initiated efforts to have it transported to Pearl Harbor, setting in motion the plan that will now culminate in its symbolic installation.
