Somalia Rejects Israeli Diplomatic Move to Somaliland

(MENAFN) Somalia has strongly criticized the appointment of an Israeli ambassador to Somaliland, a self-declared breakaway region, describing the move as a breach of its sovereignty and international law, according to a Foreign Ministry statement issued on Thursday.

The ministry said the decision undermines Somalia’s territorial integrity and contradicts international legal frameworks, including the United Nations Charter and African Union principles, which recognize Somalia as a single, unified state within internationally accepted borders.

“This action represents a direct breach of Somalia's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. It stands in clear contradiction to international law, including the Charter of the United Nations and the foundational principles of the African Union, both of which unequivocally recognize Somalia as a single, sovereign, and indivisible state within its internationally recognized borders,” the statement said.

Somalia’s government also rejected any diplomatic recognition of regions outside the authority of the federal government in Mogadishu, stressing that such actions have no legal standing and weaken international consensus on Somalia’s unity.

The statement added that Mogadishu will continue cooperating with international partners to strengthen state institutions, support democratic processes, advance reconciliation efforts, and counter terrorism.

Officials warned that the move could create regional instability and encourage separatist narratives. Somalia also urged Israel to reverse its decision and respect the country’s sovereignty and political independence, calling on global institutions to uphold international law and reject actions that could legitimize secessionist claims.

The response came after Israel reportedly appointed Michael Lotem as its first ambassador to Somaliland, which Mogadishu considers part of its sovereign territory.
